Montessori pre-school for individuals

Casa dei Bambini is a Montessori preschool located in the heart of Hong Kong. We help to prepare young children for primary school, and later life, using proven teaching methods that date back 100 years. We believe that a child's emotional and social development is every bit as important as their intellectual progress. We think that learning should be an enjoyable experience and that children should learn at the very best pace: their own. By creating a safe, home-like environment where individuals are not in competition with each other, we see children flourish. This is why Casa dei Bambini's Montessori approach helps to create happy, confident, adventurous thinkers who go into the world as well-rounded, well-adjusted individuals.

Children love to work. It excites and energises them. When children are allowed to go at their own pace and follow their natural instincts, they revel in the process of learning. We build on this. Casa dei Bambini encourages children and helps them find what they love to do the most. We don't put our children through tests or grade them on their journey. At this age, they are not in competition with one another. Instead, we place them in a multicultural environment and nurture them with individual teaching to foster a genuine love of learning that will stay with them throughout their lives.

At the heart of the Montessori philosophy is the belief that all children are inherently good. From a tender age, they feel connected to things around them and they care deeply. Children are open to life. We foster their respect for the environment and help them become enlightened human beings. Through 'learning by doing' and hands-on teaching, we encourage them to be confident and independent in all they do - from preparing their own snacks to language and maths skills. Our teachers treat every child with respect and love because we believe that a child's emotional and social development is every bit as important as their intellectual progress.

Our children work uninterrupted in a three-hour cycle. They are guided through the process of learning, from concrete examples such as counting Montessori beads to later, more abstract concepts like mental arithmetic. While each child has their own individual 'space' to work in, the unique Montessori system of 'vertical integration' - of including different ages in one class - means that younger children can learn from their elders (who, in turn, learn from sharing with the younger ones). The result? A community of children who develop and progress by actively supporting and helping one another.

Children learn by doing and through experiencing the world around them. Tasting, smelling, feeling, hearing, seeing for themselves. This is why we have imported Montessori-designed 'sensorial' teaching materials that engage and encourage children to explore for themselves. Using these specialised educational Montessori materials in a prepared environment is a scientifically proven way to teach in the most intuitive and natural way possible. Allowing children to freely follow their interests, albeit in a structured environment, means they develop at the best possible pace. Their own.

A Montessori education is a fantastic grounding for life. Famous Montessori alumni include giants of the IT world such as Jeff Bezos (founder and CEO of amazon.com), and Larry Page and Sergei Brin (co-founders of Google). Katharine Graham, the grande dame of The Washington Post had a Montessori education, as did Jackie Kennedy, wife of President John F. Kennedy and America's First Lady. Sean P. Diddy Combs, musician and business mogul, authors Anne Frank and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as well as princes William and Harry of England, have all learnt the Montessori way.

The Montessori Method of education was established in the early twentieth century and in 2007 celebrated a centenary of success. The founder, Dr. Maria Montessori, was a remarkable woman - the first ever to practice medicine in Italy and a visionary who created a better way of educating children. Over the years, she developed her unique approach by observing children first hand, seeing how they interacted, how they learnt and how they moved through specific phases of development. With a strong foundation in developmental psychology, the Montessori Method is now successfully practised in schools all over the world.

Casa dei Bambini is owned and run by Joanna Godbolt, a Montessori-trained teacher with more than 25 years' experience.

"The antidote to our weariness of and cynicism about Hong Kong pre-schools. Casa really is different - from the high ceilings, the white, bright and beautiful classrooms to the genuinely well-qualified teachers. We only wish Casa had been around for our older childen!" Jim Gardner

"We chose Casa because Joanna and her team are highly-trained Montessorians with a commitment to the method and the children. We have stayed because they have a keen understanding of our son, who loves to go to Casa and has grown immeasurably during his time there." Jennifer Wilson

"Casa Dei Bambini provided a great foundation for our daughters from the minute they started walking. The school nurtured their independence, confidence and curiosity. This is a truly special school with its approach, facilities and staff and it will be hard to find anything similar to it in Hong Kong. It is a true Montessori school with a dedicated principal that will not accept anything less than what Montessori stands for." Henry and Myrna Fajardo

"When I chose Casa dei Bambini, I made the choice to keep my daughter there until she was 6 years old. My eldest graduated in the Class of 2015 and my middle and youngest daughters still attend the school. One of the best investments we have made for our children. It's a beautiful environment and the staff love each child that walks through the door." Melissa Brewster

"We loved the whole atmosphere about Casa – would encourage anyone with kids to visit and see for themselves. It’s very special, quite unlike anything we’ve seen in HK over our 12 years here." Sarah Reilly

"Casa dei Bambini has been a fantastic preschool for our two boys, now aged 2 and 4. While we were initially drawn in by the light-filled, vast space and the beautiful materials, we have by now learnt much more about Montessori and have become very fond of this teaching and learning method. Great care is taken by Joanna and the teachers to provide a Montessori curriculum that is as pure and original as possible. We can whole-heartedly recommend this preschool." Anne Geursen-Banzhaf

"Casa dei bambini created the foundation of learning development and education in vast sense, for my older son Tobia, who attended Casa and now he is in ESF Kennedy Primary, and for my second son, Cosimo, who attended first Infant community and now he is a happy child in Casa environment."

"In Infant community I got to learn as a parent and I saw how it is the preparation that lead the children to be independent thinker in Casa dei bambini."

"As a parent I attended very often the workshops on Montessori education Joanna creates over the year, and I learned through her passion and knowledge the foundation on Montessori and how to be guide my own children through different phases." Silvia Marlia

"Our son William, now ten years old, was one of the first students at Casa dei Bambini, entering when he was three years old. One of my most striking impressions from his first day was the amount of respect that Miss Joanna and her staff showed the children and their belief that very young children had the capacity to assume a much higher level of responsibility for themselves, their environment and their social interactions than was standard at most pre-schools. Rather than speaking down to the children, the teachers spoke to the children as human beings with valuable contributions to make while also being very clear on communicating the school's rules and the expectation that they should be followed. My husband and I were consistently surprised at how this type of environment allowed William (a very spirited child) to engage with the world at a much higher level of maturity and curiosity than was typically expected of a child his age. It also established a strong foundation of confidence within him which all of his teachers since Casa have consistently cited as one of his most positive traits." Kathie and Warren Allderige

"Casa dei Bambini is a very special Montessori school. There really is nothing else like it in Hong Kong! Opened almost ten years ago, all three of our children have attended since they were walking. We have been extremely happy with the quality of care and education provided by Joanna and her ami trained teachers. The school is beautifully presented and the attention to detail is exceptional. Huge light filled glass classrooms are resourced with authentic Nienhuis Montessori materials. They have to be seen to be believed! Among the many aspects of the school that we love, are its close knit community and the belief that every child is an individual. Our children have thrived at Casa dei Bambini. It really has given them the best start in life!" Allie and Simon Tsoi

"Casa dei Bambini is run by an impressive woman with expert credentials and the children love her. She is dedicated to education and committed to her own, the schools and her teachers continued development and improvement."

"The school itself is stunning. Huge classrooms, with high-ceilings and flooded with light. The materials are top-notch. If you are looking for an authentic Montessori education in Hong Kong, there is no other choice." Caroline Major

"Casa Dei Bambini holds a very special place in my heart. It was the first and only school we visited in Hong Kong and my children thrived there from day one. Joanna is a leader and one of my favorite people and I am so happy that she laid the foundation for my children’s schooling. Schools we have had to experience since our CDB days have paled in comparison." Shannon Simon

Located in Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island, Casa dei Bambini occupies 10,000 square feet of light-filled, modern space.
